Texas’ Largest Wildfire in State History
The Smokehouse Creek Wildfire began on February 26, 2024 near Stinnett, Texas. After spreading rapidly to 500,000 acres within 24 hours of ignition due to warm temperatures and high winds, it soon grew into the largest and most destructive wildfire in Texas history.
As of early March, the Smokehouse Creek Fire had burned over 1 million acres and caused devastating losses.
According to early estimates, that includes as many as 500 homes and buildings destroyed in Hutchinson County, Hemphill County, Roberts County, and other parts of the state, sweeping power outages and evacuations, and damage to ranch and livestock property. Tragically, at least two deaths were reported in the towns of Stinnett and Canadian.
Investigations, Xcel Statement Show Utility-Owned Equipment Caused the Smokehouse Creek Wildfire
In March 2024, law enforcement investigators from the Texas A&M Forest Service concluded that utility-owned power lines were the cause of the Smokehouse Creek Fire. It also found that power lines were to blame for the Windy Deuce Fire, one of the five wildfires that burned in the region alongside the Smokehouse Creek Fire.
Shortly after the A&M Forest Service released its findings, Xcel Energy issued a statement on Thursday, March 7th acknowledging that “its facilities appear to have been involved in an ignition of the Smokehouse Creek fire.”
Xcel went on in its statement to note that while it has been cooperating with investigations, it “disputes claims that it acted negligently in maintaining and operating its infrastructure.” However, lawsuits being brought against Xcel allege that a poorly maintained wooden power pole, which had been splintering and marked with a “do not climb” warning for linemen, was to blame
What Xcel’s Admission Means for Victims Affected by the Smokehouse Creek Fire
Law enforcement investigations and Xcel’s own statement are major bombshells that confirm equipment owned and operated by Xcel Energy played a role in sparking Texas’ largest wildfire.
And while investigations are ongoing – and despite Xcel’s denial of negligence in maintaining and operating its equipment – these findings and statements will provide needed support for homeowners, business owners, and others looking to hold Xcel liable for their losses.
