The following are examples of common testosterone treatments:
As a result of using testosterone treatments, many men have suffered serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, blood clots, and even death.
In the past few years, the sales for testosterone replacement therapies have skyrocketed, despite recent studies that have linked use of these treatments to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. The reason for this dramatic increase in sales is the drug manufacturers’ aggressive, direct-to-consumer marketing of testosterone treatments to healthy men who have experienced a natural decrease in there testosterone levels. These drug companies advertise to men that if they exhibit a few general symptoms (e.g., fatigue, sadness, and grumpiness) then they have “Low T” and should ask their doctor for testosterone replacement therapy. These marketing campaigns have led to a vast over-prescription of testosterone treatments, which come at a cost.
In November 2013, a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association reported that men with a history of cardiac problems who use testosterone replacement therapies are 29% more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or even death. Furthermore, in January 2014, a study published in the medical journal PLoS One found that men over 65 and men under 65 with a history of cardiac problems were twice as likely to have a heart attack after taking a testosterone prescription for only three months.
The manufacturers of these testosterone replacement therapies knew that the risks associated with these treatments outweighed the benefits, yet failed provide adequate warnings to consumers or health care providers.
